Here's a DVD comparison.

Adding to the lack of mono and region-locking, it may use suspect dubtitles (present on IVL/JS DVDs) from the STAR TV English dub and the colours might be like the BL films = shit, and it's very weird that the DVDs look better. Maybe their HD D5 master converter is doing an awful job transferring them? Fortune Star's restoration is bit murky in colour and contrast boosted. Despite being a bit more cropped, I think I prefer HKL's (which probably isn't stretched, contrary to previous discussion).

The best version visually is New Line Cinema's, but is otherwise undesirable because it's not the HK version (cut and English dub). The next best is HKL, then (or) IVL/JS.

None of the Police Story DVDs are that great.

Barring a fuck-up (sadly all-too-possible) the BD should represent a significant upgrade in image quality.

I hope Fist of Fury is a one-off misstep as The Big Boss looks pretty damn good.

Big worry is the lack of Cantonese mono and I suspect if PS is missing this track then ALL Fortune Star BDs will follow suit rendering them useless to many fans.

Actually, it's not undesirable because it was never released on DVD. All we have is an anamorphic preview that was on New Line's Mr. Nice Guy DVD. Sad because the next best DVD, like you say, is HKL's and that's a distant 2nd.

The New Line LD can't look better than IVL's DVD, can it?

HKL's Police Story is stretched, it's obvious even while watching.

Just because it's stored on a disused medium, doesn't mean it's going to lose against what's out now - the result just depends.

It would hardly be surprising or impossible because the likes of New Line Cinema and Dimension obtain the best looks for these films. Even if it were VHS, I'm sure the levels would still beat them.

I'd love to see a comparison between the New Line LD, HKL, IVL/Spectrum and possibly the Pioneer LD (because of its reportedly good colours).


It does have moments where there's missing info and slight stretching, but its levels are better than IVL. It's a draw really (IVL = picture info VS HKL = levels).

Bluray: absolutely horrible DVD-Upscale! *vomits* = this is a bad joke. Joy Sales Blu Ray=avoid at all costs.

I've never seen a good resolution LD rip ever, but even if New Line's Police Story is exceptionally good (which we don't know), I'd still doubt the details would be as good as on the IVL. IVL has a little overblown contrast, but quite detailed, it's highly unlikely that the LD is better. Probably not even on par with it.



It's not only an upscale, but it seems the upscaled version of Dragon Dyansty's inferior Police Story (pinkified and oversharpened).

Absolutely. I don't know why people still pre-order - no guarantee of stock availability either. It's only useful for limited editions. Any other times and you're taking a risk because you don't know if there will be any problems. Best waiting for feedback from others.

Thats wierd. This is one of the titles DD has deleted from their website and now the HK Bluray seems to sport the same exact transfer.
