Looks like the US release is pretty poor, but it's the only release with english (burnt in) subs. French dvd should be much better (some info here) but how about the japanese release? I'm thinking about getting either the french or the japanese dvd. Which one should I get?
(I'll make the subs myself. If someone knows where to get them, please let me know)

I own all three DVDs. I'll post a screenshot comparison in a day or two. The French DVD is the only one with any significant extras (it has an excellent interview with director Ito).

The U.S. DVD is awful because they used a theatrical print with burned-in subs. I will give them credit for releasing the film first on DVD.

The French DVD uses the artwork for the 3rd film for some reason.

I just checked the Toei DVD and it has the original teaser trailer (along with the original theatrical trailer). My memory must be going...

For Scorpion fans, Toei's DVD of the 3rd film also has the original teaser trailer.

Thanks a lot, muldoon. I'll look forward to those caps. I'll probably need to get the US dvd too, just so that I can make subs for the film.

Here ya go...

Japanese DVD (released by Toei)
user posted image
Letterboxed and 16x9 enhanced
Japanese (DD 2.0 384 kbps)
No subtitles
NTSC

Good
-Original theatrical trailer (3.08 mins)
-Original teaser trailer (1.46 mins)
-Photo gallery (10 photos)
-The original poster art is used for DVD cover

Bad
-Cropped on all four sides (especially the left side)

French DVD (released by Studio Canal)
user posted image
Letterboxed and 16x9 enhanced
Japanese (DD 2.0 384 kbps), French (DD 2.0 384 kbps)
French subtitles (removable)
PAL

Good
-Interview with director Shunya Ito (26.27 mins) [in Japanese w/ removable French subtitles]
-Interview with critic Risaku Kiridoushi (19.37 mins) [in Japanese w/ removable French subtitles]
-Interview with Romain Slocombe (18.48 mins) [in French]
-Introduction by Jean-Pierre Dionnet (3.49 mins) [in French]
-Filmographies (Shunya Ito, Meiko Kaji, and Fumio Watanabe) [in French]
-Production Notes [in French]
-Photo Gallery (24 photos)

I have no idea who Jean-Pierre Dionnet and Romain Slocombe are. Ito speaks a few French phrases at the start and end of his interview.

Bad
-No trailers
-Non-removable French subtitles for the opening credits and songs. The French subtitles during the rest of the film are removable.
-The original poster art for the 3rd film is mistakenly used for the DVD cover

U.S. DVD (released by Image)
user posted image
Letterboxed and 16x9 enhanced
Japanese (DD 1.0 192 kbps)
English subtitles (non-removable)
NTSC

Good
-Original theatrical trailer (3.11 mins) [no English subtitles]
-The original poster art is used for DVD cover

Bad
-Burnt-in English subtitles

CONCLUSION

There is no perfect DVD so fans will have to make up their own minds which DVD is best.

Personally I prefer the Toei DVD but it could have been better if Toei wouldn't have cropped it. I only bought the French DVD because it had a Shunya Ito interview on it.

Thanks, that really helps. I'll probably get the french dvd as it's not cropped and should be easier to sub (as there are french subs already). Though I like the color cheme on Toei release more...

The Studio Canal dvd is cut. I noticed it when I was wondering why my subtitles went 6 seconds out of sync without a reason. I finally maged to track down the problem point.

The rape scene in the beginning ends with a shot of men laughing. The last 6 seconds of this shot do not feature audio on Toei dvd (which would seem intentional to me). The Studion Canal dvd doesn't feature audio... or video. In other words, its missing those 6 seconds.

yeah but didn't you watch the Studio Canal dvd? The subs were timed for the studio canal dvd . The sync problem comes when you try to fit those same subs to Toei dvd (which has 6 second of "additional" footage)

EDIT: ah yeah, sorry. I just noticed my previous post doesn't mention I was talking about the Toei dvd. My bad. So, I was timing my old subs for the Toei dvd and that's when the subs went out of sync.

I see what you mean now so I don't have to bother checking my dvd.
Again just weird that they would just cut those 6 seconds.

I'm with you on French dvds now.Too bright most of the time though i'm grateful for The Mission. biggrin.gif

I almost got the Violent Streets dvd because I thought certain scenes looked too dark on the r2j but I saw some caps of the r2fr and realized what I thought was 'too dark' was actually the natural look of the film.

I did a little bit of further comparison and noticed that Toei actually wins by a mile. Some of the problems on the french dvd aren't very visible in small caps, and some problems you really can't tell from the caps if you haven't seen the movie. One of these is the colour & brightness level which seems just right on Toei. There's lots of little details created with colour and brighness that affect the mood of the scene and those are totally destroyed on the Studio Canal dvd which is too bright and features weaker colours. On the other hand the cropping on Toei is painfully obvious at times, but in the end there's no question about it. I'm only keeping the french dvd for the extras.

Bottom: Toei

Hopefully not. It's supposed to be a port of the R1...
